Bentotoro

I assume you’ve all seen My Neighbor Totoro (1988), the weird and wonderful animated Miyazaki film. Even you haven’t yet appreciated the glory of the likes of Totoro or Catbus, it’s hard not to appreciate this awesome bento box featuring the two!

Turks and Awesome

I had the privilege of going to Turks and Caicos for a long weekend with my sir, and it was simply mahvelous. I mean, wow. Beautiful beaches, great weather, amusing wildlife, and the very best crest I’ve ever seen. Behold:

It has everything a crest should have, including flamingos and lobsters! Really, what’s not to like? Okay, so the one letdown about the crest is that the green shuttlecock thing is actually a cactus and not homage to badminton, as I had secretly hoped. That’s all right though.

Pig 05049

Last night I dreamt I was on the subway with a bunch of butchers in white coats, and there was a huge sow on a white towel lying on the subway bench. One of the butchers was talking to it, and the whole thing seemed pretty sweet and nice at the time. Strange.

With that in mind, I’ve been meaning to write about Pig 05049, a book by Christien Meindertsma. Christien spent three years tracking all of the products made from a single pig, #05049. From Christien’s website:

“Amongst some of the more unexpected results were: Ammunition, medicine, photo paper, heart valves, brakes, chewing gum, porcelain, cosmetics, cigarettes, conditioner and even bio diesel… After it’s death, Pig number 05049 was shipped in parts throughout the world. Some products remain close to their original form and function while others diverge dramatically.”

The book is beautifully designed (check out the ear tag on the spine), as well as completely eye-opening.

(Check out this fine article about the book at Design Observer.)

The moxie of Moxsie.com

It’s very rare that I come across on online store that I really, genuinely like, and Moxsie.com is the diamond in the rough.

“In addition to supporting independent designers, many with causes of their own, Moxsie has furthered its commitment to bettering the world by pledging to donate a portion of our proceeds from each purchase on Moxsie.com to a charity. During the checkout process you can choose the charity that you wish to have us donate to.”

Not only does Moxsie support independent designers and donate to charity, they offer free shipping on domestic orders. Cool, huh? As a first timer, they also gave me 15% off of my purchase, making my sweet new Warrior sneakers only $34. Rad.

I hope they fit…

Update!

The shoes didn’t fit. Moxsie is so cool, though, they sent me a FedEx label via email, so I can send those little shoes right on back for a refund. Thanks, guys.

The Beautiful Game

Oh! I’ve fallen in love with a foosball table! This exquisitely designed table is called 11 – The Beautiful Game. The tables are handmade in the Netherlands, and are available for pre-order. I can only imagine how expensive these babies are, but wow, that is one seriously attractive game.

According to 11’s site, “11’s sweeping curves reflect the beauty and grandeur of today’s modern stadiums, while its atmospheric lighting and chromed metal players capture the excitement and drama of a classic sporting encounter.” Nice.

Ampersands

Hey, you know what’s great? Type. And you know which character is especially neat? That’s right, it’s the ampersand.
It’s just really nice to look at, and this lovely tumblr blog, 300&65 Ampersands, posts a new little ol’ ampersand each day:

Just click on the ampersand to find out which font is used. Neat-o, kids.
